[The Southern Uplands]

The Southern Uplands is the name given to the large, grassy plateau that makes up the southern end of the island. Its boundary is "The Slope", a landrise that cuts across the whole island and, over a distance of about one mile, raises the altitude of the ground about 300-500 feet [91-152 m]. The other three sides of the plateau consist of steep sea-cliffs plunging directly into the rocky shoals, and offering no landing places for even small boats. The cliffs vary from 100 to 500 feet [30-152 m] high, averaging around 400 feet [122 m].

Highcliff Castle: This ancient fortified compound is the stronghold of Clan Nobi, the oldest and most prestigious of the sixteen Genifari clans. The original fort was built shortly after the founding of Ixinos to watch for any threats from the Vilhon Reach, though it was many decades before anyone came that way except for seagulls and the occasional fishing boat. When Clan Nobi took possession of the castle, they began a program of building that lasted several centuries and resulted in Highcliff Castle becoming virtually a small, walled village of Nobi (the total population is around 300). The architecture has a pleasantly antique look to it, but Highcliff Castle is probably the most impregnable building on Ixinos except for Stormwatch House. The mistress of the castle is Hephrea Nobi, Chieftain of the Nobi and member of the Goldring Council.

Holybell Glade: This is an area of thickets and evergreen copses located high up in the hills near The Slope. The only forested area in the Uplands, the Glade has a magnificent ocean view. Each year on the summer solstice, Ixinian families come here to picnic and hang hand-crafted wind-chimes among the leaves and branches. It is considered a sign of Lathea's blessing if one finds one's bell still hanging there the next year. Sleeping here is said to induce pleasant dreams and beneficial enchantments, and many children are conceived and/or born here.

Kuzello's Cairn: This ancient barrow is so named because of long-ago tales that Kuzello, the founder of Ixinos, was buried beneath it. In fact, this cairn (appearing as a semi-organized stack of stones about 15 feet [4.5 m] high and roughly 20 feet [6 m] from side to side) was probably already here at the time the Genifari first arrived. It most likely has some connection to the ancient temple of Ishtar, but the Genifari are loath to disturb the resting places of the dead and have never excavated beneath it.

Lodronos: This village of about 1,000 inhabitants (most of them Nobi and Lemi) is the best place in Ixinos to get fresh vegetables and grain, and also the best place to get farming equipment or have it repaired. Some milling of grain occurs here, but there is no source of water power here, so most of the grain is shipped to Gelevorn or Orela. Lodronos has a shrine to Chauntea, and the druid Kellomy Suthale can be found here a good portion of the time.

Polusiros: While Lodronos is the center of the crop-raising community in the Uplands, Polusiros is concerned with the raising of livestock. Most of the grassland east of the Upland Ride is given over to grazing land for cattle, horses, and some sheep and goats. Polusiros, with about 700 inhabitants, is home to slaughterhouses, tanneries, and the most skilled veterinarians to be found on the island. Members of Clan Kubezano dominate the population, with quite a few Zinthani present as well.

Stormwatch House: The oldest, most famous, and most impregnable building on Ixinos is Stormwatch House, home to the Silverstar and headquarters of the Silver Sisterhood. The foundations were laid shortly after the arrival of the Genifari, and the house served as the domicile of Kuzello, the founder of Ixinos, and her drow sorceress companion Aespathia. After Kuzello's death and Aespathia's disappearance, the house was taken over by the Silver Sisterhood and has served as the "magic capital" of Ixinos ever since.

At first glance, Stormwatch House appears to be a ready target just waiting to be destroyed by enemies. The three-story building is (unlike most structures on the island) constructed entirely of wood except for the foundation, chimneys, and entry hall (see below). There are many windows (though only one door) and large covered porches running the entire length of the house's north and south sides on all three stories.

The House is, however, protected by a mantle of magic first laid down by the mighty Kuzello herself, and improved upon and added to by fifty generations of mages since. Though it doubtless has many secret powers unknown to the populace at large, it is known that any weapon, spell, magical or energy effect, or psionic power directed at the house automatically rebounds back to its source. Any attacker targeting the house thus suffers the effects of her own attack, though any applicable saving throws are allowed. An attacker firing a missile weapon at the house must make a ranged attack roll against herself in order to see if she is struck by her own missile; the range is the distance between the attacker and the house, since the spell mantle returns the missile back along exactly the same path at exactly the same velocity.

The magical barrier covers the outside walls and roof of the house, and also covers over all windows and the edges and roofs of all the porches and the tops of all the chimneys. There is no known way for any creature or object to penetrate this barrier or to enter the house in any way, except through the front door. Air, normal breezes, smells, vision, and normal sound all pass through the barrier, but spells or attacks that effect temperature, weather, atmosphere, or the environment (from a simple fog cloud to a red dragon's breath) do not penetrate the barrier. Sonic attacks, gaze attacks, and scent-based attacks of supernatural or spell-like nature can be perceived by persons inside the House, but do not have any effect.

Teleportation into or out of the house, or attempts to enter or leave via ethereal or other planar travel, fails. Any such attempt simply fails to function, wasting the spell. There are said to be some specific teleportation conduits anchored within the house that can be used only by the Silverstar and those accompanying her.

Anyone entering the House through the front (and only) door finds herself in a two-story entry room of solid carved marble, with marble doors in each of the three walls. The walls, doors, ceiling, and floor are all covered by the same protective mantle that guards the outer walls of the house. Anyone waiting in this hall can be scried upon and spoken with by the watch-mages on duty, and will be met by the four Wardens: intelligent, powerful gemstone golems of special type (onyx, sapphire, amethyst and topaz) who wield the powers of detect magic, x-ray vision, true seeing, and hold (person, animal or monster), respectively.

The three above-ground floors contain the Silverstar's residence, main laboratories, apprentices' quarters and teaching areas, guest rooms, and meeting places for Silver Sisterhood functions. The building bristles with utilitarian magical items and permanent spell effects that range from years to centuries in age.

Below the house (and sharing in its magical protection) are an unknown number of subterranean levels containing private labs, libraries, storage chambers, magical gates and portals, teleportation conduits, scrying devices, artifacts of unknown numbers and powers, and, it is said, the tombs of Kuzello and Aespathia. Some of the deepest chambers are said to be enterable only by the Silverstar herself.

Sunnyhold: The Kubezano clanhold is a large, sprawling stone building covered with windows, balconies, promenades, and patios. Airy and bright inside, Sunnyhold lives up to its name. It is the home of Lenizoro, Chieftain of the Kubezano, and is the seat from which the clan manages its pasturelands and herds. It's also known for its large population of males, and Lenizoro seldom has any trouble convincing guests to come to her parties and feasts.

The Witchlight: This is a weathered granite obelisk about 30 feet [9 m] tall, surmounted by a ten-foot-diameter [3 m diameter] globe of smooth, faceted black stone (probably jet). An ancient spell causes the globe to become luminous when darkness falls, and to fade to blackness once again at daybreak. The monument is either of pre-Genifari or very early Genifari origins, and may once have served as a lighthouse or beacon of unknown purpose. The magic is old and fading, however, and the light is now scarcely as bright as that of a common bonfire. It is still a popular place for nighttime meditation and serves as a useful landmark for travellers on dark nights.
