The Army

Only women are permitted to serve in the army, and all are required to do so unless they are invited to join the Silver Sisterhood or one of the priesthoods. Upon reaching adulthood, all Genifari females undergo a three-year period of intensive military training.

Any female citizen of Ixinos who has completed the above training is considered a member of the Ixinian army. Excused from service are those too old, sickly, or injured to fight. All Genifari over age 60 are excused automatically unless they wish to continue, and can demonstrate to their division commanders that they are still fit for battlefield combat. Some women are declared unfit for duty -- either temporarily or permanently -- because of illness, injury, physical deformity, excessively poor strength or constitution, or mental incompetence. Pregnant women, or those nursing babies less than one year of age, are forbidden to fight except in the defense of their own homes.

During peacetime (i.e., no major attack or invasion is in progress), Ixinos maintains a standing army consisting of one-fifth of the combat-eligible women on the island. A young woman who has completed her three-year basic training period must report for one year of active duty on the first day of the new moon that follows her birthday in the next year. For example, if she graduates from basic training in the fall of the year 1369, she must report for duty at the new moon that next follows her birthday in 1370. During her one year of active service, she will spend ten consecutive days of every month in military exercises and training. For the remainder of each month, she will be allowed to live at home and engage in her normal activities, but she must be ready to report instantly for battle at a moment's notice. After twelve months of this, she returns to "reserve" status and remains as such for four full years, during which time she is not required to report for formal training. On the fifth year, she must once again report for a year of active duty. This pattern holds true until the Genifar becomes too old to be of use in combat. On average, each woman will spend 9-10 full years of her life in active military service, in addition to her three years of basic training.

Priestesses and members of the Silver Sisterhood do not have to report for this training; they have their own clearly defined roles to play in the defense of the homeland. Active members of the She-Wolves likewise are exempt from this requirement. Otherwise, every warrior on the island, except for the Queen and the full-time officers of the army, are required to train. Even clan chieftains are not exempt. Genifari who leave Ixinos in order to adventure are expected to return in time to fulfill their commitments. Those who cannot report for training due to incapacity or maternity must report when they are able, and still owe a full year of service. Women in active service are expected to see that they do not become pregnant during their active year.

Women not on active duty are still expected to keep themselves in good fighting condition by training informally with friends and relatives. Nothing could be more humiliating for a Genifar than to be considered "out of shape" or unfit for battle. Such things as obesity and chronic laziness are virtually unknown among able-bodied Genifari; there is simply too much social sanction against it (not to mention physical distress when such a person tries to participate in the rigors of structured training).

The overall commander of the army is General Chanea, a 15th-level fighter and one of the Daughters. In time of war she is answerable only to Queen Elissa.

The regular standing army constantly rotates its membership and varies somewhat in actual numbers from month to month, but it generally includes about 2,000 members, including irregulars like scouts and naval personnel.

The army consists of three main branches: infantry, cavalry, and archers. Each branch has its own captain and is subdivided into divisions, each division having its own sergeant. The soldiers range in age from late teens to late fifties (or even older), and their experience varies accordingly. Some of the soldiers can be quite high in level, having been at one time members of the She-Wolves or of adventuring companies. The Genifari try to keep a steady mix of younger, less experienced soldiers and older veterans in each division. That way, the young soldiers can benefit from the teaching and experience of the veterans, while the veterans are supported by the undiminished physical prowess and stamina of their younger comrades.

The INFANTRY consists of fourteen divisions, each having approximately 100 members. Each division consists of 50 1st-level, 35 2nd-level, and 15 3rd-level warriors; the average level of the infantry is 2nd. Seven of the divisions are armed with short swords, and seven with spears. All of them should be considered specialized in their particular weapon, and all carry daggers as well. All of the infantrywomen are also proficient in either punching or wrestling.

The infantry wears chainmail and leather breeches. They carry small shields and wear armored caps. In melee, Genifari infantrywomen should be considered to have an armor bonus of +6.

Captain Tacaro, a 9th-level fighter, is commander of the infantry. She is a brawny, dark-haired woman who is considered one of the best swordswomen on the island. Reporting directly to her are the Lieutenant of Swords (Jilisa) and the Lieutenant of Spears (Sharo), who each command the appropriate seven divisions. Both lieutenants are 6th-level fighters. Jilisa's sergeants (each leading a division of 100 women) are Mirimo, Jadini, Padri, Líshe, Amaro, Herea, and Caenia. Sharo's seven sergeants are Halliani, Lummaro, Borweno, Hirkka, Sanio, Elli, and Selo. All of the sergeants are 4th-level fighters.

The ARCHERY branch consists of seven divisions, each having about 50 archers. Each division consists of 25 1st-level, 15 2nd-level and 10 3rd-level warriors. Average level is 2nd. Because of Ixinos' terrain, the archers are primarily intended to strike from cover in the trees and hillsides. As such, they are usually armed with longbows, and these are their weapons of specialization. However, they are all proficient with short bows as well, should they be needed for more close-quarters fighting. All archers carry knives as well.

Archers wear little armor, as mobility is their greatest asset, and they usually operate from behind cover. They wear full-body suits of high-quality leather. They do not wear arm or leg armor, but they strap their dagger-sheaths along their shins, so that the weapons can serve as leg protection when not in use. They have an armor bonus of +2.

Captain Maliki is the young commander of the archers. A 9th-level fighter, she is over six feet tall and has knee-length blonde hair which she usually wears in a long braid (she keeps extra arrows stuck into the braid for easy access). Her sergeants, all 4th-level fighters, are named Jili, Isharo, Karia, Vairóme, Irienno, Alquari, and Rildi.

Ixinos has a small CAVALRY: four divisions of 50 light horse each (all are warriors of levels 2-5; average level is 3rd). The island's terrain makes large-scale horseback fighting impractical. Still, the riders' characteristic skill makes them quite valuable as a tactical weapon. They do not carry lances, but bear maces and short swords as well as knives. Since they are almost always fighting opponents who are on foot, they are a quite deadly weapon. At least half of the cavalrywomen have ridden with the She-Wolves.

The cavalrywomen wear full-body leather armor, and their breeches are reinforced with steel wire to protect their legs from hacking attacks by opponents on the ground. They wear no helmets, but carry bucklers. They have armor bonuses of +3, and all have at least 4 ranks in the Ride skill.

The cavalry commander is Captain Karíne. She is a 10th-level fighter with a deep tan and bad complexion who is known for her immense skill as a trick rider. Her sergeants (all 6th-level fighters) are Damali, Lanoro, Erina, and Mero.

The military also maintains five ships (two cogs and three coasters) which patrol the waters to a distance of five miles offshore. They are more of a patrol than a military force, and most of Ixinos' seagoing might is provided by the She-Wolves and their compatriots, the Red-Wave Riders.

The above-described forces defend Ixinos under all circumstances except an organized, large-scale invasion by an enemy bent on conquest rather than simple raiding. Under such circumstances, all able-bodied warriors on the island would immediately be called up for active duty. Within a matter of hours, 15,000 Genifari could be called into the field. Such contingencies are carefully planned for, and there would be no confusion regarding the organization or command structure of this vast army; each woman is acutely aware of what her role is under such circumstances.

The army is seldom called upon to defend Ixinos from anything more serious than a pirate raid. Even the pirates have learned, for the most part, to confine their activities to simple plunder rather than murder. Too often have they experienced the angry retribution of the "she-devils", as the Genifari are commonly called among the pirates. Coastal raids occur mostly on the eastern shores of the island, and amount to a landing (often under cover of night) by a band of armed pirates in a rowboat, who rob one or two houses or shops and then make their escape. Once every two or three years, however, some particularly rash, foolish, or mad pirate captain succumbs to grandiose dreams of conquest and resolves to take Ixinos as his own. In most cases, his experienced crew -- who fear the Genifari with a superstitious fervor -- dissuade him from this course of action (sometimes by throwing him over the side before he can get them all killed). Those who do dare to attack the island are invariably butchered without quarter, as they have been since the days of Kuzello. This, of course, perpetuates the healthy fear with which the local sailors and pirates view the Genifari.

To actually conquer Ixinos would take a truly impressive mustering of military might. The Genifari are essentially xenophobes who take an almost religious view of combat-readiness. The island is relatively small, and they have had over fifteen centuries to become initimately familiar with its every nook and cranny.

The She-Wolves

The She-Wolves are a mercenary company comprised entirely of Genifari. Outside of their own land, they are by far the best-known representatives of their culture.

The group's official name is the Sisters of the Bronze Dawn. The nickname "She-Wolves" was first applied to them by the pirates of the Sea of Fallen Stars, not only because of their ferocity in battle, but also because of the efficient, wolfpack-like group tactics they employ with almost supernatural precision (especially from the point of view of the chaotic pirates). Although the group's members don't use the name "She-Wolves" themselves, they don't take offense at others doing so -- it adds to the atmosphere of menace that they try to maintain around themselves.

The She-Wolves was created in 1276 D.R. by two retired adventuresses, Rizieki and Finvazano. These two fighters are remembered as folk heroines, not only in Ixinos but in Turmish as well. During the invasion and conquest of Ixinos in 1245 D.R. by the blue dragon Anaglathos and his forces, Rizieki and Finvazano headed guerrilla bands that made life hell for the invaders for a matter of five full weeks after the rest of the Genifari had been beaten into submission. After they were finally captured, the dragon decided to punish them with humiliation rather than death. They were carried back to Turmish as slaves, and forced to serve as half-naked dancing girls in Anaglathos' court -- and as rewards for whatever brutish mercenary captain happened to be in the dragon's favor at any given time. They endured this existence for two years.

In 1247, Anaglathos was slain, thanks in large part to inside information the two women had been covertly providing to agents of the freedom fighters led by the paladin Corwin Freas. Both were present at the final battle, still clad in their dancing-girl costumes. Rizieki blinded the dragon's left eye with a hurled dagger, and Finvazano took his right eye with an arrow. The blind wyrm was then quickly dispatched.

The two warriors were instrumental in rebuilding Ixinos' military after the occupation, as advisors to the War-Matron Heshea Truespear. One matter of great concern to them was the fact that young Genifari did not have the opportunity to gain true combat experience except when the island itself was under attack, and their very homes in immediate peril. Also, since few of them ever left their home island, they had no understanding of the nature and motivations of their potential enemies.

To correct these deficiencies, Rizieki and Finvazano, in the 1250's, began leading relatively small bands of Genifari adventurers (warriors and spellcasters all together) on campaigns around the Vilhon Reach area. These ranged from caravan guard duty to traditional dungeon-delving to support operations for their Emerald Enclave allies. The campaigns with the Enclave took them on excursions into the Nunwoods, Chondalwood, and even the distant Gulthmere Forest. For the first time, Genifari had the opportunity to become rangers.

By 1276, the number of Genifari requesting places in these adventuring bands had become so large that the two founders decided to combine all their recruits into one large group, which could either operate as a single unit (giving the women training in large-group military operations), or could split up into smaller bands for the honing of personal combat skills. Named the Sisters of the Bronze Dawn in honor of their patron goddess, Lathea, the group initially consisted of about 100 members. By 1300 it had expanded to 160, and in 1358, following the War of the Iron Legion and the Time of Troubles, it expanded to its current size of 240 women.

Rizieki died in 1279, the victim of a poisoned orc-arrow. Finvazano retired from the She-Wolves in 1280 to succeed Heshea Truespear as War-Matron of Ixinos, a position she held until her death in 1297.

The current leader of the She-Wolves is Theia Heithalata, an 11th-level paladin of Tormo. She assumed leadership of the company in 1357, and was immediately called upon to lead it through a time of dire crisis as first the Vilhon, then all of Faerûn erupted in chaos. When it was over, she rebuilt the She-Wolves into the force it is today. Theia is assisted by her two aides, the archer Hundela zu'Enmi (NG hf F7) and the spearwoman Aena Lemi (LG hf F6). Theia, Hundela and Aena are the only full-time members of the She-Wolves.

Membership in the She-Wolves rotates; there are over 600 women on Ixinos who belong to the group, though only 240 are on active duty at any given time. Genifari of any character class who have demonstrated exemplary abilities and discipline may be accepted into the company, usually after having completed at least their first scheduled year of regular military service on Ixinos.

The She-Wolves are divided into seven units. Each is commanded by one of its members, popularly chosen by all of her comrades within the unit. When the leader's time comes to rotate out of the She-Wolves (usually after one year), another leader is chosen. Theia may remove any unit commander who proves to be unsuitable. All of the commanders report directly to her.

The units are:

  • The Sword Sisters, a unit of 50 3rd-level (on average) warriors specializing in short swords. As armor, they wear bronze breastplates and banded-bronze "skirts" that protect their hips and upper legs. Their arms and legs are left bare, both for mobility's sake and so that they don't succumb to heat-stroke in the typical sweltering Vilhon weather. They carry small shields, wear steel "caps" on their heads and leather boots on their feet.

  • The Spear Sisters, consisting of 50 3rd-level warriors specialized in the spear. Each warrior carries two spears (at least) at all times, one for hurling and one for melee. They wear the same sort of armor as the "Sword Sisters".

  • The 50 archers are known as The Cicadas, because of the distinctive, eerie buzzing sound their arrows make when they fire a volley in uncannily perfect unison. They wear leather tunics, short trousers made of studded leather, and boots. All are 5th level warriors.

  • The Wolf Riders are the cavalry unit. There are 50 of them, averaging 4th level of warrior ability. They are all proficient with lance and short sword. They ride medium war horses. The Wolf Riders wear scale mail and leather breeches.

  • The scout contingent consists of 10 rangers, varying in levels from 4th to 7th. They carry long bows, and function as deadly snipers if there is suitable cover in the vicinity of the battle.

  • Ten members of the Silver Sisterhood, of levels 2-5, provide the She-Wolves' magical firepower. They normally consist of five wizards and five sorceresses. These spellcasters confer carefully so that they always have a wide variety of spells at the ready; some concentrate on area-effect offensive spells while others use individually-targeted killing spells to take out leader-types and opposing spellcasters; some carry a variety of defensive spells while the rest stock up on magics designed to confuse or frighten foes. They dress so as to be indistinguishable from the archers (although their clothing does not function as leather armor like the archers' does). They carry long bows or short bows, and know how to use them.

  • Twenty clerics travel with the She-Wolves. They vary in level from 3rd to 8th. Usually, ten of them are war-priestesses of Tormo. They carry mainly offensive and protective spells, fight with maces, and wear chainmail and leather breeches. The other ten priestesses are dedicated to Lathea, Selûne, and the other goddesses. During battle, they serve mainly to heal the wounded, although they also carry some offensive and defensive spells. Their armor and weapons are as appropriate for their respective goddesses. At least one of the priestesses (and usually two or three) are birth-seers.

All of the She-Wolves carry, and know how to use, daggers.

The She-Wolves operate much like any other mercenary group. Theia and her two aides meet with any prospective employer to satisfy themselves that they will not be asked to violate any of their standards of ethics. They will refuse any job which requires them to:

The She-Wolves will inform potential employers that any attempt to make them violate any of the above conditions will result in immediate termination of the contract. If they are tricked or coerced into violating any of these ethical points, they will kill the person responsible.

As long as the employer upholds his or her end of the bargain, the She-Wolves will never betray a contract. They charge 500 g.p. per week for the services of the entire active company. If unusual expenses or risks are involved, this price will rise accordingly.

The She-Wolves will accept employment by males as well as females, though they expect to be treated with respect at all times (and will not hesitate to make that expectation known). Contrary to popular rumor, they do not automatically refuse to fight female opponents. They do, however, make a policy of trying to help any female they encounter who needs their assistance (especially if she is being victimized by a male in some way).

This particular group of Genifari -- even more so than others of their culture -- are known for their incredible efficiency and organization in battle. As a group, they memorize and practice certain maneuvers (both common and uncommon) much as an athletic team might memorize a playbook. By means of a few monosyllabic commands that mean nothing to anyone other than the She-Wolves, the entire company can instantly and uniformly execute the called-for move. They operate almost as a single entity, and are seemingly immune to the disorganizing effects of fear or even battle-fury. The She-Wolves are calm, competent, cold-blooded killers on the battlefield. They are never needlessly cruel, and they usually do accept surrenders as long as their foes have fought honorably, but no one has ever looked forward to facing them in battle.

If Ixinos itself is faced with any serious military threat, all She-Wolves on the island (both active and inactive) muster into their usual companies to serve as an elite force against the invaders. If Theia is present, she commands the group and reports to General Chanea. If she is absent, the general appoints one of the most senior She-Wolves present to serve as field commander.

    The Red-Wave Riders

Because they dwell on a relatively small island, and because they exist to defend their homeland as well as to take on mercenary jobs, the She-Wolves are all trained to live and fight on shipboard as well as on land. Despite their competence at sea and basic knowledge of the work necessary to operate a ship, the She-Wolves are not professional sailors. In their conflicts against pirates and other seagoing threats, they are aided by the Red-Wave Riders.

The Riders came into being more than a century and a half ago, as part of the great armada that was gathered to break the power of the dreaded pirate-king, Urdogen the Red. After that goal was accomplished, the Riders vowed to continue their efforts to protect the Vilhon Reach from further predations by any other pirates who might seek to follow in Urdogen's footsteps.

For many years, the Riders provided a formidable thorn in the sides of the Pirates of the Fallen Stars. Over time, however, as new pirate leaders rose and fell with no sign of any who could provide a serious threat to the area, membership in the Riders began to decline.

In 1294, She-Wolf commander Annilorè approached the declining Riders with an offer. The Riders would be permanently retained by the She-Wolves as a means of striking against the pirates on the seas themselves, rather than fighting purely defensive battles on the very shores of Ixinos. The Riders would train the She-Wolves to be competent in seagoing combat, and good enough sailors to make themselves useful on the way to and from battle. In return, the Riders would be allowed safe haven in Ixinos, and freedom from any harassment by the Genifari or the Emerald Enclave in those waters. Though the Riders viewed this offer with trepidation (like all sailors in the region, they had come to fear the Genifari by superstition and reputation more than personal experience), they accepted the offer in the end.

Today, the Riders are still an independent company, but about half of the 150 or so members are now Ixinians (both male and female; the Riders don't discriminate based on gender, so many Ixinian males take service with them in order to gain more freedom and a more exciting life, while still remaining close to home). The rest of the members come mostly from nearby coastal towns; a few come from farther afield than that.

The Riders have three caravels and one cog, all kept in the best possible repair. All crew members are paid fair wages from the She-Wolves' treasury, and are also allotted bonuses for combat service. The Riders perform the following services:

The commander of the Red-Wave Riders is Sairya Dhree (LG hf F8), an imposing, mahogany-skinned Turmishwoman from Alaghôn, and a very experienced and competent sailor and pirate-fighter. Each of the three caravels is manned by a crew of 40 and armed with two medium ballistae. When fighting pirates, about 25 of the 40 crew on each ship are She-Wolves.

When ferrying the She-Wolves between Ixinos and one of the Vilhon ports, only one ship is generally used. About 15 She-Wolves remain on deck at any given time for defensive purposes, while the remainder of the company stays in the extraplanar area created by the magical item known as Rizieki's Barracks (were it not for this item, even the entire Riders fleet would not be able to carry the whole company).

The Riders also maintain a fast cog that serves for reconnaisance and transportation of important passengers, never (hopefully) for combat.
