The Amazon heroine is a woman from an Amazon culture or society who stands forth as a champion of her people and her gender. She is a paragon of female strength and courage, an inspiration to women everywhere and a bane to males who seek to bully or subjugate them.
An Amazon heroine comes from a nation, tribe, culture, or society that is either exclusively female, or in which women are considered the dominant gender. This can be a true Amazon culture, with a homeland and a social structure passed from generation to generation, or an all-female organization with a strong pro-female ethos that can exist within the context of a larger non-Amazon society. The Amazon heroine, during the course of her adventures, makes it a priority to look after the welfare of her female companions, defend the honor and safety of her Amazon homeland or organization, help females in distress, and foil any male who seeks to abuse, enslave, terrorize, bully, or subjugate any female.
An Amazon heroine does not necessarily hate men, and she may interact with them normally as long as they treat her and her fellow women with respect and recognize them as equals. She will never voluntarily take service under the command of a male unless there is an overpowering motivation to do so. She will normally respect the legitimate authority structure of the society she is visiting, however, unless it is oppressive toward women.
Members of any class can become Amazon heroines. Fighters are the most numerous among them, but many Amazon societies have quite militant traditions among spellcasting classes, and such characters also make excellent Amazon heroines.
Hit Die: d10
Requirements:
To qualify to become an Amazon heroine, a character must fulfill all the following criteria:
Gender: Female
Base Attack Bonus: +5
Intimidate: 4 ranks
Special: The character must have been a member in good standing of an Amazon society or organization for at least 10 years.
Class skills:
The Amazon heroine's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are: Climb (Str); Concentration (Con); Escape Artist (Dex); Hide (Dex); Intimidate (Cha); Jump (Str); Knowledge (women) (Int); Move Silently (Dex); Ride (Dex); Search (Int); Swim (Str); Tumble (Dex).
Skill points at each level: 2 + Int modifier
Class features:
Weapon and armor proficiency: An amazon heroine is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, all armor, and shields. Armor check penalties for armor heavier than leather apply to the skills Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Pick Pocket, and Tumble.
Battle cry (Ex): The Amazon heroine can, as a free action, utter a battle cry during combat that increases the morale of her female allies. During the round following the battle cry, all of the Amazon heroine's female allies who are able to hear the cry gain +1 morale bonuses to all attack rolls, damage rolls, and saves. If the allies are also members of the Amazon society or organization, the bonus is +2. The heroine may utter her battle cry no more than once every 10 rounds of combat.
Compulsion resistance (Ex): The Amazon heroine gains a morale bonus to save against spells or psionic powers that attempt to take control of her or force her to act against her will, if such spell or power is cast by a male. The bonus is +1 at 1st level, +2 at 5th level and +3 at 10th level. Inherent spell-like or supernatural abilities of a compulsive nature also trigger this bonus. This bonus cannot be used if the Amazon heroine can't determine the gender of the caster, if the caster has no apparent gender (e.g., a mind flayer), or if the caster is an aberration, animal, beast, construct, magical beast, ooze, plant, shapechanger, or vermin. Note that many undead, elementals, outsiders, and fey creatures have no apparent genders.
Smite male (Ex): When battling a male opponent, the Amazon heroine may add hit points to the damage total of any one successful strike she makes, equal to her level as an Amazon heroine. (Thus, a 6th-level Amazon heroine would add +6 to her damage roll for that attack). The heroine's player may announce her character's intention to use this ability after determining that her character's attack has been successful. This ability can be used once per day at 2nd level, twice per day at 7th level, and three times per day at 10th level; however, it may be used no more than once per day against any one particular foe. This bonus cannot be used if the Amazon heroine can't determine the gender of her opponent, if the opponent has no apparent gender, or if the opponent is an aberration, animal, beast, construct, magical beast, ooze, plant, shapechanger, or vermin. Note that many undead, elementals, outsiders, and fey creatures have no apparent genders.
Spell Use (Sp): An Amazon heroine gains extremely limited use of arcane spells in order to help her pursue her goals. At 3rd level she gains access to one 0-level spell (or cantrip); at 6th level she gets a 1st level spell, and at 9th level she gains a 2nd-level spell. These are in addition to any other spells she may have access to from other classes. In using these spells, she is treated as a sorcerer of the same level as her Amazon heroine level. Like a sorcerer, the heroine must possess a Charisma score equal to 10 + the spell's level in order to cast the spell. She is limited in the roster of spells she may choose from; they must be chosen from the following list:
0-level: resistance, ray of frost, detect poison, flare, daze, disrupt undead
1st level: endure elements, protection from chaos/evil/good/law, detect undead, true strike, magic missile, color spray, cause fear, chill touch, ray of enfeeblement, burning hands, expeditious retreat, feather fall, jump, magic weapon, shocking grasp, spider climb
2nd level: protection from arrows, resist elements, Melf's acid arrow, web, see invisibility, flaming sphere, blur, scare, bull's strength, cat's grace, endurance
Spells may never be changed once selected. The heroine must provide the appropriate material component or focus. The Amazon heroine may always elect to take a lower-level spell in place of a higher-level one she is entitled to, as long as the spell appears on the above list.
Stare of Daggers (Su): At 4th level, an Amazon heroine can, once per day, channel the righteous fury of women everywhere to send hostile or bullying men fleeing in terror. This is a standard action. The heroine may attempt to use this ability against any identifiably male humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature (but not any other type of creature), but the males in question must have done something to make the heroine legitimately angry, such as attacking, threatening, insulting, or otherwise crossing her or her allies (when in doubt, the DM decides whether the provocation has been sufficient). This ability functions similarly to a cleric's ability to turn undead (see Player's Handbook, pp. 139-40). The males in question are treated as if they were undead creatures of the same hit dice as they themselves have hit dice or levels (add levels in all classes to find total levels, and NPC classes count the same as PC classes).
The heroine fixes the offending males with a furious stare, then makes a standard turning check (1d20 + Charisma modifier) to find the highest hit dice or levels of males she can repel, and then her "turning damage" check (1d20 + her amazon heroine level + her Charisma modifier) to see how many levels/hit dice of males she can send fleeing. Those that are affected are compelled to flee from the heroine at top speed for 10 rounds (1 minute) unless they are physically unable to flee, in which case they cower for that amount of time. Turned males will not attack the heroine or her party while the effect lasts, but take no other penalties in combat; if the heroine or her allies attack a turned male, the effect is automatically ended.
Unlike clerical turning, the heroine cannot use this ability to destroy, rebuke, or command anyone, and she can only use the ability once per day. Victims get no saving throws, but any ability, spell or power that offers protection against fear, mind-affecting magic, or compulsion magic protects against the stare of daggers.
Empathic Rescue (Su): Once per day at 8th level and above, an Amazon heroine may, as a move-equivalent action, absorb any attack that deals hit point, ability score, or level damage to any female ally within 30 feet [9 m]. This ability may be used at any point in the round, before or after the Amazon heroine's normal action, as long as the heroine has taken no other move or move equivalent action previously in that round. This ability must be used in the same round that the ally takes the damage that is to be absorbed. When empathic rescue is used, all hit point damage, ability score damage/drain, or level damage/drain from one (and only one) specified attack previously in that round vanishes from the ally and is instead inflicted upon the Amazon heroine. Any physical wounds suffered as a result of the attack also vanish from the ally and appear in an identical location on the Amazon heroine's body.
Use of this ability is an all-or-nothing proposition; the heroine must absorb the full damage of the specified attack, not just a portion of it. The heroine can only absorb as many hit points of damage as her own current hit point total +10; she cannot use this ability if her own hit point total is 0 or below. If use of this ability lowers the heroine's hit point total to 0 or below, she suffers the usual effects of being disabled, dying, or dead, as appropriate. Similarly, the heroine can only absorb as many points of ability drain as she has points in that ability, or as many drained levels as she has levels. If ability score damage/drain causes the heroine's Constitution score to drop to 0, she dies. If she absorbs 50 or more hit points of damage, she must pass a Fortitude save to avoid death from massive damage, regardless of whether or not the ally succeeded at her own save. This ability cannot be used to absorb any effect, spell or power that does not deal actual hit point, ability score or level damage, except for those that cause death with no specific damage (e.g. finger of death, disintegration, etc.) The heroine can absorb the effects of such an "instant kill" attack, but doing so automatically costs her her life. The heroine can use this ability to absorb the effects of poison, but she can only absorb the initial damage or secondary damage, not both (since the poison actually remains in the ally's body). Diseases and curses cannot be absorbed. The Amazon heroine never gets her own saving throw to avoid or mitigate the effects of an attack she absorbs; she simply takes the same amount of damage the ally originally took.
Any level drain or damage absorbed by the heroine is automatically deducted from her Amazon heroine levels first, then from her other classes in order from highest-level to lowest.
This ability can even be used to absorb an attack that would kill an ally by reducing her to -10 hit points or less, or to 0 Constitution or less.
